What Are Conscious Fashionistas? Our Story
Everyone wants to be one, and this is how we got our wallets and closets growing…
The Story:
Conscious Fashionistas is comprised of 4 girlfriends who are passionate about fashion, but would like to present an alternative, community based and sustainable way of shopping for fabulous recycled clothing. Our goal is to create an alternative to the mainstream corporate fashion model.
On tight budgets, we discovered more character in the used versus the new and had the desire to look fabulous each time we stepped out the door. So Nayomi, Amanda, Poonam, and Madison decided to do things differently.
We flung our closets open and gave each other keys to our houses. Gaining access to each other’s clothing and shoes instantly tripled our wardrobes and created an even stronger sense of community.
Chapter 1: Nayomi took on the role of Buyer, combing vintage racks and various hard to find locales for fabulous, recycled fashions.
Chapter 2: Amanda, now dressed solely in Conscious Fashionistas garb, gets stopped on the street at least once a week and complimented. One woman said, “I love your look. Can I take your photograph for our fashion website?” And the effect on men? We won’t even go there. (You’ll have to ask her to tell all…)
Chapter 3: When asked what Conscious Fashionistas means to her, Poonam gushed, “It means I have both guys and girls on their knees unzipping my high heeled boots (a Conscious Fashionistas trademark item) with their teeth!”
Chapter 4: As a fashion designer herself, Madison’s instinct is to help fashionistas become conscious about the fit, color, and style of their daily ensembles. Once meeting Nayomi, Amanda, and Poonam, and the Conscious Fashionistas cause, she was the perfect last leg for our four-legged stool!
Epilogue: When women left our inaugural event in April, donned in new styles and smiles, we knew we had hit a clothemine. So we created this site for other Conscious Fashionistas to land, and spent the next months creating and organizing our Conscious Fashionistas Shopping Parties.
