Who’s Checking Conscious Fashionistas Out? Press

National Geographic gets green with Conscious Fashionistas in their Green Guide.

“We learned about food on Friday, and on Saturday we learned about San Francisco’s green fashion. We met with two members–Amanda Coggin and Nayomi Munaweera–of the Conscious Fashionistas, a group of four vegetarian, earth-aware women who started a venture to find used clothing, sometimes rework it a little, and sell it for super-cheap at fashion events they host. We met them at the Salvation Army in The Mission and rummaged around with them for their next event in November. There was a black and white sleeveless pinstripe dress, sort of twenties-style, that could go eighties-style in a flash with the right belt. Trish, getting a little loose with the cash, bought an old leather purse, red flats and a belt for $10. What a reminder to reinvestigate the wardrobe–or shop vintage–before buying new every season. And this comes from a New York City girl with an affinity for fine clothing.”

oligoville interviews one of our very own…

“When I think eco-friendly fashion, I think pants made of rice paper and bikinis made of bamboo. Amanda Coggin, Public Relations and Marketing Director for the San Francisco based company Conscious Fashionistas, thinks vintage. Amanda teamed up with vegetarian eating, and environmentally aware friends Nayomi, Madison, and Poonam to rewrite the discourse on what it means to wear green. These Noe Valley gal-pals scour the city for the most extraordinary pieces of used clothing to strut down the runway and sell (at a very recession-friendly price) to their adoring fans. Conscious Fashionistas believe that consuming second-hand goods is essential to living an ecologically responsible lifestyle. By buying thrift, you are using previous created materials, rather than exhausting new ones. The one-of-a-kind pieces the Conscious Fashionistas find keep the ladies of San Francisco unique, green, and irresistible to all the boys (and girls)…” Read the full interview.

Ideal Bite takes a taste…

The Way We Wore: The Bite: “Some memories may be beautiful…but no need to dress in painful tribute to the bad ones. (Oversize knitted hat? Bad Babs…) Enter the Conscious Fashionistas and their couturecentric, all-night dance parties - like the one this Saturday. These secondhand-style mavens gather duds they’ve hand-selected from local thrift stores, set up dressing rooms, and throw in a stylist to help you sort out a new look all in the effort to reduce our wasteful ways - Americans throw away more than 68 pounds of clothing per person each year. While ladies dig the bargains ’til 11 pm, fellas can take in belly dancers (+ cocktail), and gear up for the runway show and DJ-fueled dance party into the wee hours. It can be that simple.”

Flavorpill swallows our concept…

More Flavor: Fashion: “All glamour and flair, the four women behind Conscious Fashionistas go against the grain, favoring thrifty, salvaged finds over newer, more expensive off-the-rack pieces. With an eye for what’s unique and hip, these style mavens organize shopping expeditions and trunk shows that encourage women to think outside the box (and the landfill). At this CELLSpace event, dig through a selection of clothing and accessories handpicked by the Fashionistas, as DJs spin house, breaks, and drum ‘n bass. Later in the evening, a catwalk show and a belly dancing performance provide inspiration for some fresh outfits and promote a body-positive attitude. Just make sure to bring plenty of cash, as credit card machines are not available.”

Nitevibe boogies us into one of their top weekly nightlife picks…

7×7 Magazine covered Conscious Fashionista’s in their July 2008 fashion issue.

“On July 26, Noe Valley gal pals Amanda Coggin, Nayomi Munaweera, Tamara Madison and Poonam Kapoor–aka the Conscious Fashionistas–hosted their Shopping Party, Part Deux, in Potrero Hill, where the thrifty style-mavens-turned-event-planners helped guests update their wardrobes with secondhand finds. “It was all clothes that we were buying thrift because we had made a pact that we weren’t going to buy anything new,” Coggin said. “We think of couture as a state of mind.” The Go For A Loop Gallery was transformed with racks of clothing while guests went in and out of the dressing room, receiving personal styling tips. A runway fashion show backed by world and house DJ beats revved up the cheering crowd of nearly 120 guests to dance the night away. “The less I have,” said Coggin, “the more creative I’ve gotten with my outfits.”"
